Complex flow patterns at multiple scales affect the performance and life span of hydraulic structures and facilities such as spillways, intakes, tunnels, valves, pumping stations, mixing tanks, reservoirs, and fish passage facilities. In natural systems, the movement of water influences aquatic habitat, sedimentation, energy dissipation, and water quality.
NHC has extensive experience in the development and application of numerical modelling for hydrology, river hydraulics, sediment transport, hydraulic transients in pumps and pipes, and hydraulic structures. Our most detailed numerical modelling, which ranges in scale from small site-specific problems to full forebay and tailrace analysis, is conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD models are complex and sophisticated numerical tools used to investigate flow patterns and velocities in three dimensions and provide a detailed visual representation of the modelled system to address hydraulic problems.
