Square Children’s is a mixed-use development located on the former site of the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The project involves the demolition of all but one of the existing buildings and the construction of six new residential towers of 20-32 floors. In accordance with Montreal urban planning by-laws, Lasalle|NHC performed a scale model study to assess the project’s wind impacts on pedestrian comfort. The project buildings and surrounding area were modelled at a scale of 1/250 and placed in a laboratory flume to simulate wind-building interactions with water. Based on velocity measurements taken at pedestrian level in current and future conditions, it was determined that the project could deteriorate wind comfort in certain locations. Lasalle|NHC recommended mitigation measures to address these concerns.
