Since the major floods of June 2013, which affected large parts of the province, Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) has taken various actions to improve flood management and the operations of its River Forecast Centre. These actions have included comprehensive review of its flood forecasting processes and systems, including the hydrologic models used as a basis for flood forecasting. NHC provided technical review and comparison of various hydrologic models that could be used for flood forecasting throughout Alberta and developed a short-list of potentially suitable models. In subsequent work, NHC conducted pilot studies of two of the short-listed models, HEC-HMS and Raven, on the Red Deer and Simonette river basins, which are representative of the wide range of hydrologic conditions and data coverage in the province. The work conducted by NHC will assist AEP in making informed decisions on improvements to flood management throughout Alberta.
