The $1.8 billion, 13 km Edmonton Valley Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is one of the largest capital projects in Edmonton’s history. Extension of the City’s LRT network to the southeast required replacement of an existing pedestrian bridge with a new bridge crossing the North Saskatchewan River near the downtown core. NHC provided river engineering expertise to the design-build team throughout the multi-year construction project. Our role included design and assessment of construction berms, bed scour and bank protection, and ice loads on bridge piers. These hydrotechnical considerations were critical to satisfying regulatory requirements, managing construction impacts on the riverine environment, and the long-term resiliency of the instream bridge structural components.
