To eliminate hydraulic constrictions in the City of Baltimore’s 100-year-old collection system, improvements to the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant Headworks Facility will include construction of two new pump stations in conjunction with new fine screen grit and equalization facilities. NHC was subcontracted to provide a conceptual design review and design recommendations for the proposed Influent Pumping Station (600 mgd) and Equalization Pumping Station (400 mgd), and then conduct a physical model study of the preferred alternative for each pumping station. The models were used to optimize the screen channel design and the wet well designs in order to improve the approach flow hydraulics, maximize performance, and produce acceptable flow to the pumps in accordance with the Hydraulic Institute Standard.
