Northwest Hydraulic Consultants is pleased to welcome Dr. Thanos Papanicolaou. Thanos joined NHC in February 2020 as a Senior Project Engineer. He brings 27 years of experience in sediment transport, river mechanics, and watershed processes and has been involved in numerous high profile projects, including sediment and hydraulic analysis for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and analysis and recommendations for the design of five dams for the HydroAysen Project in Chile.
Thanos has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in fluid mechanics, sediment transport, watershed sedimentation, and numerical techniques at Washington State University and Albrook Hydraulics Laboratory, The University of Iowa, IIHR – Hydroscience and Engineering, and The University of Tennessee, where he founded the Hydraulics and Sedimentation Lab. Thanos served as the Editor in Chief for the ASCE Journal of Hydraulic Engineering from 2014-2019 and is a member of several editorial boards. He is also an ASCE Fellow and the recipient of three ASCE awards: The 2008 Walter L. Huber award, the 2014 Hunter Rouse award, and the 2018 Hans Albert Einstein award for his science and engineering contributions to hydraulics and sediment transport and for linking upland with instream processes.
Thanos will serve as a senior advisor to projects and help with short course training and project development.
