NHC was recently retained to complete the design of a revetment extension to protect the community of Galena, Alaska from progressive bank erosion on the Yukon River. The project included the development of design plans and specifications for riprap bank protection for 2,600 linear feet of the north bank of the Yukon River upstream of a previously completed section.

The design was challenged by the presence of permafrost throughout the length of the project reach, no all-weather road access for construction material delivery, and river barge transport of heavy equipment limited to only the summer months. Additionally existing locally available rock quarry was accessible only by winter ice road.
