About the Role
As an Intermediate River Engineer, you will have the opportunity to implement state-of-the-art river engineering methods to address problems related to natural riverine hazards (e.g., flooding, erosion, sedimentation) and hydrotechnical design in the context of climate change and variability.
Based in our Kamloops office, you will be involved in a range of river engineering analysis and design and assessment work, including hydrology, geomorphology, scour and erosion protection, flood hazard/risk assessment, aquatic habitat restoration, sediment management, and hydraulic structures. Responsibilities for project related tasks will include project management, fieldwork, construction supervision, report writing, data analysis, design development and mentoring junior staff.
Required Education, Skills, and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil, geological, or environmental engineering with a focus on hydrotechnical engineering.
- A license to practice engineering (PEng), in BC. Applicants are to provide their registration number.
- 8+ years of consulting experience in the field of river engineering including experience in numerical hydraulic modelling and hydrotechnical engineering design.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience completing technical assignments in a team environment.
- Proven experience in engineering calculations and analyses in support of river engineering design.
- Ability to undertake site inspections.
- The ability to conduct statistical analysis utilizing large data sets.
- Proven ability to conduct independent analysis, develop visualizations, and interpret complex physical processes by analyzing geospatial time series data.
Experience Considered an Asset (but not required):
- Master’s degree or higher.
- Proven ability to evaluate and design river engineering projects, perform engineering hydrology, develop and apply numerical models for the simulation of river hydraulics, understanding of channel form, river processes, and sediment transport, experience in preparing drawings and reports.
- High technical standards and a commitment to delivering high quality work products.
- The ability to define problems, prioritize tasks, and meet agreed upon timelines.
- Experience with computer aided design (CAD) software such as AutoDesk Civil 3D.
- Demonstrated project management, collaboration, and teamwork skills

The scope of work is likely to include habitat, fish passage, hydraulic design of road and pipeline crossings, bank protection, dam operation and safety, and flood hazard assessment and mapping. Engineers in our Kamloops office work within the broader group of NHC’s hydrotechnical specialists. This group includes experienced PhD level experts to junior engineers and technicians.
Salary: $110,00 – $130,000 per year (starting salary will depend on knowledge, skills, and experience).
